- Step 4. Reflect
- Step 5. Backup your course
Step 1. Remind students to back up course materials and assignments
Remind your students to download any course materials or assignment submissions important to them. The following tutorials will help them learn how.
- How do I download assignment submissions for all of my courses?
- How do I view content offline as an ePub file as a student?
Step 2. Save your Gradebook for record retention
- How do I download grades from the Gradebook?
- How do I download all student submissions for an assignment in the Gradebook?
Remember: Course and grade book information are protected by the Family Educational Rights And Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 and as such should be stored with attention to student data. When downloading and backing up your grade book, it is recommended that you encrypt the file. Visit Microsoft's Protect an Excel File tutorial to learn how to encrypt your gradebook files.
Step 3. Submit your final grades
Submit your final grades in Banner. These “Grade Entry Instructions” can help you.
⚠️Managing Incompletes⚠️Do you have a student who has taken an INCOMPLETE and still needs access to their Canvas course...but you don’t want to leave it open for everyone? You can use course SECTIONS to allow ONLY students who have been granted an incomplete to access your course, even after it has closed!
Follow these easy steps in KB article: [Link for document 164788 is unavailable at this time]
Step 4. Reflect
You can easily reflect on your course by adding an unpublished page into your Modules. Consider naming it “Note to Future Self” or something else that will remind you to reference it when planning to teach the course again! Here are some prompts to guide your reflection:
- What worked well in the course? What did not work as planned?
- What technical difficulties did I or my students have?
- What areas of the course would I like to improve?
- What content or activities would I like to add?
Step 5. Backup your course
It’s strongly encouraged to make a backup copy of your course. Visit the How do I export a Canvas course tutorial for instructions. We encourage you to do BOTH of the following:
- Export course as .imcss (cannot open outside of Canvas - keep in Google Drive folder for future use if needed)
- Export course into a NEW Sandbox (delete any previous Sandboxes for the same course so you maintain the most up-to-date version of the course on your dashboard).
